Chapter Seven

It was a pyramid, a succession of progressively smaller rectangles laid one atop the other, and it rose up a hundred feet from the valley floor. A stairway, like a gigantic ramp, slanted up one side. "It looks Mayan," Manny said. His voice cracked. "That makes no sense. The Mayans never came this far south."

He looked desperately at Christine. "Do you see the same thing I do, or am I having a hallucination? I see a big pyramid with steps."

"I see it," she said soberly. "But I don't believe it."

"A McDonald's would be more plausible," Manny said, with wonder in his voice.

"Let's get down there," Tony said.

They scrambled down the hill, tripping over their own feet. The pyramid loomed below them and showed no sign of dissolving like a mirage in the desert. It looked quite convincingly real.

When they reached it, they touched the blocks of stone hesitantly, as though they expected the structure to burst like a soap bubble. "Percy's lost city," Christine said. "He finally found it. Can you imagine how ecstatic he must have been?"

"It is the find of the century," Raeder said, almost to himself. "I wonder what is inside." He pointed to a chamber set at the top of the stairway. An entrance was clearly visible.

"Look," Tony said, "this is all incredibly exciting but it's almost sundown. We need to make camp. I don't want anyone going into this place tonight. We'll wait for daylight. There's too many stories of people going mad or simply disappearing, for me to want to rush in. We'll start exploring tomorrow."

Manny nodded. "Yes, old stones do not eat men. Something else around here is hungry." He looked at Tony. "What do you think about posting a guard tonight?"

"I'm for it. Why don't we split it—I'll take one half and you the other."

"Good. I'd like the first half if you don't mind. I enjoy the jungle nights. So," he said, rubbing his hands together, "let's get started."

That evening, over dinner, Christine asked, "Who do you think could have built this place?"

"It beats me," Tony said. "What do you say, Manny? It looked familiar to you."

"To me, as I said, it looks Mayan. This is, of course, unheard of. The Mayans are in Mexico, Guatemala, northern Honduras, and El Salvador. There are many mysteries about them, though. I suppose it is possible that some could have come this far into South America. This discovery will make us very famous. I think it will rival the finding of Tutankhamen's tomb."

He leaned back, picking his teeth, grinning happily. "You see, Raeder. You come with us and your fortunes improve. Because of this expedition you will be able to go home and set up another agency for the rich tourists. You will have two fax machines and a beautiful, voluptuous secretary. Will she be dark or fair, I wonder."

"What do you think is inside?" Raeder said, ignoring Manny's speculations. "Perhaps there are valuables within which are worth much money."

"I'm sure the Brazilian government will have something to say about it if there are," Tony broke in.
